On her way back to where the others were gathered in the lounge, Addison passed the landline telephone in the hall. There was no-one around; the carabinieri must still be with Riccardo securing the perimeter or whatever it was he called their constant patrols. After a moment's consideration, worried about the cost of a call back to Australia, Addison figured she would leave a healthy tip with Sofia and Riccardo to cover it and dialled the number for the beach house.
She'd almost given up by the time a sleepy voice answered the phone.
"Hello?" the voice said with a yawn.
"Adam? It's me, Addison."
"Oh, hey, Addison! How's it going over there? Is it cold? Are you getting much writing done? Hey Henry, it's Addison!"
"Hi Addison!" Henry's voice was more distant but still clear, and Addison choked back a tear. She hadn't realised how homesick she was. But there was no time for that.
"Adam, listen. There's been a bit of an incident here and I need your help." She explained the murder, the house, the isolation of Isola Santa, the suspects, and the efforts so far of the carabinieri.
"Oh gees, Addison. Are you serious? A murder. How's Layla coping?"
"She's doing okay. Listen, we need your help. I don't have much time."
"Of course. I'll get on the next flight. Where did you say you were?"
"Isola Santa, in Tuscany. But no, I don't want you to come here."
"Are you sure?" Addison heard the urgency in his voice, and was touched by his concern.
"I'm sure. It's at least a twenty-four-hour journey from Australia to Europe, then you'd have to find your way to this little ghost town somehow. Plus it's December. Everyone is travelling for Christmas, and the weather is atrocious. No, it's not sensible for you to come here."
"She says no," he said, voice muffled, and Addison figured he was addressing Henry. "What can we do from here then?" he asked, speaking back into the phone.
"There's an undercover Interpol agent here on the tour. At least he says he's Interpol."
"You don't believe him?"
"I think I do, but I just want to make sure. We've been deceived before by people who weren't who they said they were."
"I understand," said Adam. "What's his name?"
Addison told Adam everything she knew about Diego, including the new information about his murdered brother. "That part may or may not be true," she added. "He could have invented it to avoid detection by the others. Only Layla and I know he's with Interpol."
"I'll find out," said Adam, full of the confidence she knew and admired. "Who was the victim, and who are the other suspects?"
Addison gave him the names of the other people in the house and told him as much as she could before she heard noises outside. "Go to Isaac," she managed to say just before the front door opened and Riccardo and the carabinieri officer blew into the house.
"I will," said Adam. "It's seven on Sunday morning here, but I'll call him as soon as I'm done talking to you.
